Privacy policy
Last Frost Date is a static website: a set of pages and data files. There are no accounts, no sign-ups and no database of visitors. This page explains what is and isn't collected, and by whom.
The ZIP code you type
The ZIP code lookup runs entirely in your browser. When you type a ZIP code, your browser downloads one data file that covers every ZIP code beginning with the same three digits (for 50309, the file for ZIP codes starting 503), and finds your ZIP code in it on your own device. Our code never puts the ZIP code you type in a web address and never sends it in any request, so it is not sent to us. (Ads and analytics scripts run on the same page, as they do on most sites, and Google's scripts may collect the usual information about your visit, such as the page you are on; see the sections below.)
Our web host does see that a file for "503" was requested, just as it sees every page you visit; that's how websites work. It doesn't see the ZIP code itself.
If you tick "Remember my ZIP code on this computer," the ZIP code is saved in your browser's local storage so that your dates appear the next time you visit. It stays on that computer, isn't sent anywhere, and is removed if you untick the box or clear your browser's site data.
Advertising and cookies
The site is paid for by advertising through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to show ads, and may use information about your visits to this and other websites to show ads that interest you. Ads don't appear on the printable planners, the about, contact or privacy pages, or the error page.
You can control this. You can turn off personalized ads at Google Ads Settings, and industry-wide opt-outs are available at aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Analytics
The site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. It records the pages viewed, an approximate location derived from your internet address, and general device and browser type. We use it in aggregate to decide what to improve. Our code doesn't send your ZIP code to it. Analytics sets its own cookies so it can tell a returning visit from a new one.
Server records
Like every website, the servers that deliver these pages receive your internet address and the address of each page or file your browser asks for, because that's how pages reach you. We don't use these to identify anyone.
Your rights
If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Union or the European Economic Area, the GDPR gives you rights over personal data held about you, including access, correction and erasure. If you are in California, the CCPA gives you similar rights, including the right to know what is collected and to opt out of its sale. This site doesn't sell personal information. Because there are no accounts, we hold no personal records about you to retrieve; requests about data held by Google for advertising or analytics can be made to Google, or to us and we'll point you to the right place.
Children
The site is for a general adult audience and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children.
Links to other sites
Pages here link to NOAA, the USDA, universities and other sites. Their privacy policies apply when you visit them; this one doesn't.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it.
